Greece asks NATO for help with Olympic security

Last Updated Fri, 12 Mar 2004 14:13:44

ATHENS - Greece has asked its NATO allies to help with security during the Olympic Games this August.

A formal appeal by Greece's foreign ministry on Friday asked the security alliance for help "mainly in areas of aerial surveillance, joint monitoring of seas and protection against a chemical, biological and nuclear incident."

The request follows a series of deadly bombings in Madrid, but Greek officials did not say the request to NATO was specifically linked to the blasts in the Spanish capital on Thursday, which killed 199 people.

But Greek Defence Minister Spilios Spiliotopoulos did say the attacks would lead to a strengthening of Games security.

Greece has previously said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would be on standby in the event of an attack in Athens.

NATO has not yet responded to the request, but top officials have said in the past that the alliance would be willing to help.

Some NATO countries are already part of an Olympic security advisory group.

Safety plans for this years Olympics are at unprecedented levels. Security costs are more than $800 million US – three times higher than security expenses for the Sydney Games.

Plans include about 50,000 police and soldiers, more than 1,400 security cameras, and aerial surveillance by helicopters, a blimp and airplanes.

A no-fly zone will be imposed around Olympic venues and other sites.

Greece is also putting together a 200-member team for biochemical or other attacks.
